This rather safe comedy film was at number twenty or so in the top fifty list on C4. Does this say, theologically, that the Americans are more 'God fearing' and the British seem to have a more personal 'matey' relationship with God with the attitude that 'God's mellowed since the Old Testament. He can take a joke!'. Personally I, like many others, know it wasn't an insult to God, Jesus or the Holy Ghost. Just an attack on organised religion.

It was a good film but can you imagine Peter Kay on it, that would have made it even funnier. Just imane the bit where it says "Hes not the Messiah he's a very naughty boy" and imagine him saying "garlic bread GARLIC BREAD" now that would be fantastic! Do you agree?

T. L. Of Brian is absolutely funny as hell to me as i am very familiar with the bible and so on. now if you thought about it you could see that it is maybe blasphemous and is not serious and chaste but it is still loveable to me because it is so funny.
I have a sense of humour and however it was intended I laugh at it. Are there any women here? andd the old guy getting stoned for saying Jehovah the unspeakable holy name. I could imagine the Jews not liking it.
Yanks do have strange senses of humour and i could see them not getting it.
There are some jokes that are just brilliant. It is much better than any other biblical film which never could do justice to God, his purposes or his son and i include Heston the lot,.
So why not send the whole thing up ? If we lived in a world where everyone worshipped God then it would still be funy. It is about people and all the attitudes of the day. absolutely hilarious.
If you do not find this film funny you have no faith. In fact the more faith you have the funnier it is !!

Agree.

Plus, it was never *actually* about jesus. he says plenty of times that he's not the messiah.

But I think it's great that we voted for something not exactly "safe" as no. 1, because it was, indeed, the funniest.
as John Cleese said in an interview defending the film, "400 years ago we'd have been burnt at the stake for this. I'm suggesting we've made an advance".

Although I still prefer Michael Palin's originally suggested title: "Jesus Christ's lust for glory". They had to water it down a bit from the original idea, but it was still great, and rightfully voted the best of the best, by the people who reqally know about these things; the Brits.

I think the Brits do have a much more relaxed attitude towards religion and Life of Brian is definitely one of the funniest films ever ... but Some Like it Hot is a little rib-tickling gem as well! And let's face it .. Marilyn Monroe is so much better to look at than any of the Monty Pythons! With the possible exception of Michael Palin with his cheeky wee grin and sparkling eyes! Oh be still my beating heart!!

I agree, it does seem to support the theory that America is more conservative in terms of religion. However, there was a big stink about it in parts of the UK too. I think also that radical Americans are a LOT more vocal than radical Britains (remember how the protests at Jerry Springer the Opera paled into comparison with those across the ocean). I loved Life of Brian cos you can watch it time and time again and still be crying with laughter.

The genres seem to be different.
Life of Brian was a farce, and it was okay, but there were a number of political and sexual gags in there which some younger people might not get.
But Some Like it Hot, being a situation-comedy, appeals to people of all ages (even stickly grannies and kids).

I doubt it has anything to do with religion.

I truly think that there is more religious freedom in Britain than there is in the US - when i say that I dont mean in regards to the law. there are laws about religious freedom in the US, the constitution is based on such ideals but when it comes down to attitudes of the people then Britons are more relaxed about the issue. It's a cultural thing. could you imagine an american monty python?
I kind of agree with you. i think the film was an attack on the PEOPLE who organised religion as opposed to the religion itself. i mean, the very last song is basically condensing the entire bible into one catchy tune.
Always look on the bright side of life :) is their any Christian who wouldn't agree with that?

*I prefer the galaxy song*

The Life of Brian was funny but Some Like It Hot is funnier in a classier way. I prefer the latter, and I'm a Brit...

50 years ago a differant fim would have recieved the 'ever' vote, so its a decieving award. In th efuture their will be another funniest film 'ever'. Commerce has a way with words !.

Having said that, it is a really good film and you can learn a lot from it, including mankinds inherent inability to question fiction in those 'biblical' times.
Luckily mankind is busy progressing and slowly discarding the pagan and associated ways.
