Hehe, good question. K, well the reason why we do so is to respect our elders. Why do we respect them in the first place? Well i guess, just cos it seems right. But talking about respecting your elders, why cant youngsters also be respected?! It really ticks me off the way older people except you to respect them so much yet they could'nt give a damn how they treat you! Or you will treat an elder with respect and you won't get any of it back! How does that work?! Im ok with respect for elders if they are ok with respect for us youngsters. We are no less than them! Just less experienced in life-SO WHAT!?

If you are young and healthy, standing for a little while will do you no harm, and you will have done your good deed for the day.Old people and pregnant women or those carrying a small child are more in need of a seat that you. It is simple consideration and if you are able to make a small sacrifice for the common good it is good training to get on well in life.Your day will come when you have to travel on public transport and you will be glad that someone is doing the same for you.
By the way, you do not have to stand for half an hour. Often a new place becomes vacant and you can sit down again.

SHAME ON YOU!!! you say standing for half an hour isn't comfortable. how would you feel if it was your grandparents or elderly parents being left to stand on the bus. if you are a fit healthy person you should stand up. it is also a respect thing. some of these old people have been through wars and so much more than you could ever imagine. also your parents must so embarrassed .

Well, you can look at it in a number of ways, including all the crap about cow towing to elders and betters and war veterans (why pay respect to somebody because they went out and killed others?).
The way I see it is that the world would be a lot better place if people co-operated with one another a bit more and people helped eachother on the basis that one of them needed help and the other is able to give it.
For example, if a 60 year old man who is fit and strong gets on the bus, why should a 21 year old with a recent injury have to get up so the old bloke can sit down? However, if a perfectly healthy and strong person in their teens to their forties occupies a seat while a frail old person struggles, they are clearly a bit of a tw*t.
On the other hand, if we had a decent public transport system and people didn't dump their luggage on the seats and refuse to move it and people didn't have 6 or 7 kids climbing all over the place, we wouldn't have the problem.

Well for one when your young your balance is a lot better than an old person.
They may suffer from illnesses that make it extremely painful for them to stand.
If when the bus pulled away they were standing & fell over they,d probably break a bone.
When you break a bone as a youngster you get over it in a few weeks........ but when it happens when your old IT CAN KILL you.
Then theres the thing about respect, you dont know who your standing next to.
That old man next to you @ the age of 18 may have been @ war fighting the Germans STOPPING them from invading this country & stopping you growing up with a German Surname!!
That is if you,d have even been born in the first place

When you get older, you will understand. People start dying from about the age of 25. They lose bone density and muscle strength - that's why it's important to continue with weight bearing exercise and maybe why you see so many old people out walking in their tracksuits. After 60 years, balance also becomes a problem.
Besides that, older people had to wait until they were older before they could stop getting up to offer someone older their seat.

They are old and have more problems than you standing up for half an hour. I can't believe that anyone respects their elders so little. Have some respect and help them out. If you don't then you won't be setting an example for future generations, and when you are old you will have to stand, as some selfish young person will take your seat.

Just imagine whats its like when you're much older and your legs aren't what they used to be? You're young fit and strong now but, say 50 or 60 years you probably won't be.
People used to say its respect for the people that fought a war to give us the lifestyle we have today (meaning the WW2).
Nowadays I'd say its more a matter of COURTESY. Be nice to someone that doesn't have the advantage that your youth gives you. As I say - maybe one day you'll appreciate a bit of that courtesy coming back!

If it is not comfortable to you then think of the person who is in his/her 70's. They can hardly stand and even if they can they do not have the same stamina as a younger person. The same applies to pregnant women. So I know you may be uncomfortable but let's show some concern for the aged. After all some day we will be in their shoes.

A young boy once gave up his seat on the bus for me when his mum told him to "make room for the pregnant lady". I was really grateful but didn't have the heart to tell them I wasn't expecting at all .. I was just fat!
