Cats are naturally litterbox trained. I have never seen a cat that once you show them where the box is that they don't continue to use it, unless it is full. Normally they won't go anywhere else in the house unless there is the smell of another animal's urine in the spot where they go. If you are having a hard time or if this is a baby, close the cat in the bathroom with litterbox, food and water with no rugs on the floor. This way they will go where they can dig.

Spraying them with water teaches them that what they are doing is wrong. However, please don't flick them with your finger on the nose. This can scratch them or even break one of the tiny bones they have in their face. The water is harmless and 99.99% of cats hate water on their bodies.

Good luck!!!

if it is an adult cat that never used a litterbox before it might be a slightly continuos issue, but not always......here is an idea get a litter pan and fill it with a very generous amount of litter about 3 inches deep....show her the litter box and place her in it even and mover her paw back and forth a little in the litter then let her alone...if she goes outside of the box pick it up and place it inside the litter box. also if the cat has a favorite spot to use as a toilette put the litter box there...it can always be moved later after she starts to use it.

Just like training a human, it takes time.
You have to work with the animal, teach it what is acceptable and whats not.
If the cat gets on a counter remove it, by picking it up and putting it on the floor, in time the cat will not get in the counter again.
Hope this helps.

You don't "train" them. You "bargain with" them.

Most cats will resent you if you try to enforce your will on them, and that goes tenfold if you use physical force (including spraying them). Some might eventually submit, but they won't be happy about it, and may hold a grudge against you for it.

Generally speaking though, if you want them to be house-cats... you restrict their access to the outside world indirectly... and they will get used to being indoors. If you see them doing something you don't approve of, confront them about it and present them with the alternative until they accept it... and make sure to comply wholly to their will when they do things your way in return (you could think of this as "rewarding", but you should remember that they're the masters... not you).

Correct misbehavior by flicking them on the nose or spraying with a water bottle. If that doesn't work, wack their little keester. Good luck.
