A "Cause Celebre" is basically a philantrophic or volunteer cause that a celebrity will pick up to attract attention to it. For example, if Michael J. Fox devoted much of his PR and attention to stem cell research, that would be his "Cause Celebre", and he gets free press because he is a famous actor.

A cause célèbre (of which the plural is causes célèbres) is an issue or incident arousing widespread controversy, outside campaigning and/or heated public debate. It is particularly used for famous long-running legal cases. It is a French phrase in common usage in English.

In French, cause means a legal case, and célèbre means "famous".
