I tend to keep eye drops for much longer that a month, but the packaging advises that one should discard of it after a month, some say three weeks. Is this a marketing spiel? If not, why do they recommend such a thort time period?

Expiration dates are actually guidelines... but eye drops can be especially vulnerable to contamination if the bottle tip comes in contact with eye lashes. Prescriptions can be used for a reasonable time after the expiration date as this is a way for the pharmacy companies to sell more products.. so the answer to your question would be - it's a marketing "spiel"

Hmm, I've used eyedrops a couple of times that are probably even a year old or more and they always seem to help my eyes when I need them. Who knows? I think it's safe;)

Some recommend a shorter time fram than that because they lack preservatives. If you want ones that last longer, get the drops with mercury (thiomerosal) in!
