as an example when you receive flowers, how do you know if they came from the heart or the pocketbook?

It depends on the way they go about it. If they make a huge deal in the presentation...... meaning drawing more attention to their giving than to your receiving, then I always question their sincerity. Like.....picking a time when we're at a party. Tons of people and he asks for everyone's attention. Makes a production out of it by making a speech....pulling out the most lovely bouquet of a dozen roses and waits for the "oooooooo's and ahhhhhh's" from the crowd. Smiles and looks around the room acknowledging the people and nodding and smiling and selling his self before ever handing them off to me. THAT is not sincere.

But a man that picks me a daisy.....places it on my desk and disappears before I arrive. THAT is the special gift I keep. Sure, the flower will wilt.......but that memory is retained in my heart and in my thoughts....ALWAYS!!!

I got a very special gift yesterday. No bells, no whistles, no attention, no nothing. But I opened a box and an apple was inside. This person didn't guess. They Knew. Because they knew me....... knew what would mean the most to me, the gift was special. It's the gifts that reflect our knowledge of the person that show the most sincerity.

It's a gift. This isn't the thing to analyze. Besides, you can only guess at their motivation for the gift, and you apparently don't trust their sincerity.

In my opinion, what counts is the way you're treated, not only when you're alone with them, but when you're out in public. You also need to look at how they treat others. You can tell so much about a person about how they treat others who are in a "subordinate" role.

For example, I had a friend who treated restaurant staff horribly, but was wonderful to me. It didn't take me long to figure out the friend had self-esteem problems, and needed someone to treat badly, especially in public.

That's what you need to consider, not second-guessing why they gave you a gift.

If this person didn't care about you they wouldn't have gotten you a gift at all. Be thankful that you have someone that truly cares about you and don't overthink their reasons for being sweet. Yes, ordering flowers is a tad more generic than getting you something that only you would enjoy but, it is still a very thoughtful gesture :)

You know, don't over think it.
A gift is a gift, they wanted you to have it and maybe it wasn't a huge sacrifice, but it took effort.

Its the same thing! Unless someone tells you what they want you have to guess. But if you know them really well then you will get them some special (something they really want).

you should always take gifts as if they are from the heart. his/her action later will prove what they really feel for you.

well, it would be really rude to ask that person, but wouldn't it be nice to imagine that it came from that persons heart?
