LATAs, there is also another class known by the oxymoronic name local long distance, which refers to calls within the customer's LATA but outside of their local calling area. This area is normally served by the customer's local telephone provider, which is usually one of the Baby Bells, despite attempts by some CLECs to compete in the local telephone market.

Long Distance is defined by the phone company based on local exchanges and network operations. There are some numbers in different area codes that aren't long distance, and some in my area code that are; some companies now offer an "expanded local" service that'll include surrounding areas as part of local. The thing to do is look in your phone book (if you can find it). Generally in the front they'll have a section that lists the area codes and prefixes that are considered local. since more and more companies are bundling local and long-distance service into one "eat it all" package, this has become less of a problem.... however, a good way to guess is to dial the number as a local one if it's in the same area code. if you're told you have to dial 1, then it's considered a long distance call.

Local long distance is when you call someone that has the same area code as you, like say there's a someone 2 towns over but you have to dial 1 then area code then the number, that's local long distance.

Nice....Here's a term that you can understand.

You live in a Big City perhaps? Well, Local is within the Big City....Local Long Distance is WITHIN the COUNTY!

Years ago, the whole county was LOCAL, now they can whack you for calling outside the city.

But the good thing is....In smaller cities and towns LOCAL is still the county....and LOCAL Long Distance is the counties touching YOUR COUNTY.....

THIS IS A LATA..........and Latas charge a different rate than "real" Long Distance charges.....about a penny or two less per minute......

While I am not familiar with Sage Telephone Company,
the answer to your question is as follows:

When you signed up for telephone service, the company
that you dealt with gave you a list of places you could
call with no extra costs involved. That is your "local" area.
Generally (dependent upon the actual service you bought) you may call any number within that area and talk for as long as you want without any additional costs,

Often your telephone company will have service into other surrounding areas which are not outside certain fixed boundaries (in the USA - called LATAs for Local Area Telephone Access or Local Access Telephone Area).
since those additional locations are not within your free calling area, if you call those places, the phone company will charge you an extra fee based upon the length of your call.

Now if you call outside of that LATA that you are in, you will probably have to go through a Long Distance Company whose job it is to interconnect all the various LATAs. So you will have free connection to the Long Distance Company, and a billing from them for the call out to somewhere else based upon your minutes of usage.

That is how it works.

Your job is to manage your billable telephone service features bill such that the local phone company only bills you the smallest amount possible and yet you still receive the maximum service that you need. In some companies there are wide area calling plans that will reduce your long distance charges considerably. The usefullness of
those plans depends upon your expected call patterns and frequency of calling. Long Distance Companies
have similar plans and you will need to select the one that is most useful to you.
