My friends cockatiels died. All three of them in the space of just over an hour. They threw up and had spasms. They were very healthy birds. The first died at 3.00AM, and last at 4.30AM
Her husbands looked on the net and sort of came to the conclusion that it might have been gases given off by their non-stick pans. They live in a studio flat and the birds are in the living area (so is the kitchen). She said it was a cold and the windows were shut. Normally they are open whilst cooking.
If it was the teflon coating ... How would they have died?
She really wants to know.
Sorry for the macabre question. Thanks for any sensible answers.

Teflon releases gases that are deadly poison to birds. The gas attacks their nervous system in the same way as nerve gas in humans. This gas is given off when the teflon is over-heated. There was nothing that could be done to save the birds once they had been exposed to it.

When Teflon is overheated, it gives off tiny nanoparticles that have jagged surfaces that are inhaled deep into the bird's lungs. They can then travel into the interstitial lung space and remain there. This causes pulmonay hemorrhage and edema, causing death. Most birds that breath it at high levels will die immediately. These gases are only extremely toxic for the first 3-5 minutes though before they either coalesce and are too big to be inhaled as deep into the lung or the jagged edges get smoothed out. Unless they were cooking on these non-stick pans at 3am, I doubt that is what caused the death of the birds. I'd look for other toxins in their cage/environment as all three dying so close together definately points to a toxin.
