No disrespect intended. This hindu guy I work with tells me that hindus have many gods in many forms. He told me that this one god they worship called Shankar is actually a penis. I think he is totally making this up because I don't think he's a very religious kinda guy. Can any Hindu please confirm this??

I can take you to a higher plane and explain the symbolic meaning of a shivling. but you and many of the people who have answered here wont understand any of it. So let me put this simply. Linga in sanskrit language means mark or indication. It also means penis as aderivative from this meaning.. Shivling means the place where God Shiv is indicated. Other than that it has nothing to do with penis. If it is penis then one of you may ask whether the foreskin is pulled back or not etc., which will all be sheer nonsense. Hinduism is a very old religion and it has many wonderful things to offer. Dont waste time on trivialities. That way the Cross which represents gore, pain , torture and death can never be perceived as a representation of lofty ideals.Sorry i dont mean any offence here. Similarly there are many symbols which are rediculous in many religions.

Its true hindus have many gods, it could be near to 830 million today, that is approx mately 83% of india's population. every one had a personal god.

as for shankar, it is shivshankar. its not just penis. the symbol is called shivlinga - penis is the prominent one visible, but look carefully you can also see the vagina. together make the shivalinga.

its the symbol of fertility and, virility. now symbols have to be understood. have you noticed the trident in shivashankar's hand, that trident is the symbol of 'Power'. only a society that is tolerant, understanding can have such symbols. every part of the body has a significance. sex is divine, western religions will not agree to this. for them sex is sin. that is not the case with india. the carvings on the temples of khajuraho, the entire kamasutra. only a society that is rich, artistic, openminded can do such wonderful piece of art.

sex is the most intimate communion with god. if you ever had an intimate sex with you partner, you must've come across a moment where you felt every thing has stopped and gone blank. rarely anyone notices that moment.

religious person is not one who goes to temple, church or mosque and prays. those are external actions which have no basis. religion is life, that is what hinduism is all about.
