The sad truth is that housing is very expensive and therefore access to it is rationed. I used to work in this field, and have been on the front line dealing with people everyday who just want a decent home. There aren't enough to go round, though, unfortunately.

Asylum seekers are not entitled to regular benefits and their accommodation is provided through a government agency called NASS, so I doubt that this is the case for the house you have seen. It's a misconception that asylum seekers and refugees get homes before other people, the facts just don't bear this out.

Once asylum seekers have been accepted as refugees (and take a moment to acknowledge what this means - usually torture/risk of death/persecution in their home country) then they would be treated as homeless in much the same way as people born in the UK. As a UK citizen I'm proud that we are able to support people in this way.

Anyone claiming housing benefits from an empty home is commiting fraud, regardless of their background, so it's worth reporting. Most councils have a fraud hotline of some kind.

Waiting for a home is difficult and frustrating, and there are thousands of people in the same situation. I do hope things look up for you soon.

the council won't do anything about the empty house. The best thing to do is contact the local benefits office and tell them what is going on with that house. They will investigate and hopefully stop all benefits. It might be a while before that house is available.
Unfortunately our housing system works on a points basis. Asylum seekers will always get the most points. It took my sister, her husband and their 1 year old a year of living in one room (the size of a double room) in a B&B before the council gave her somewhere to live.
Good luck and keep on at your council. Make a pest of yourself with them and eventually they will hopefully give in just to keep you quiet!

The council don't care about people that need houses. My sister had three children and was living in a two bedroom flat. The oldest child is a boy and he has ADHD. The council was actually breaking the law as once a boy reaches a certain age they are not allowed to share a room with his sister.
It finally took letters from her sons specialist stating that the living conditions was contributing to her sons condition and that he needed his own room and a garden to burn off his energy. She finally got a three bedroom house with a huge garden.

Report the fact that this house is being used in this manner to the Council, the DSS and the immigration people. For a start it is fraud and it probably breaks their conditions of beng in the country! DO everything you can in this case that is LEGAL! Maybe that'll get the place empty and you somewhere to live!

Good luck!

its crap isn't it???
i own a house on a council estate. in my road alone there are 4 houses used by asylum seekers as an address only.
i ttally disagree with this as there are people like you who genuinely need a home and cant get one.
luckily our council is taking appropriate steps to find these people and serve notice on them

i work with somebody who worked for the council, she had to leave because the foreigners get everything first, go to the council offices, cry and beg, make a scene, do it everyday until the want rid of you and they will give you a house, good luck!

Why have children if you don't have anywhere to live? I'm sick and tired of working to support unmarried mothers who I see clogging the town centre with their brats, smoking and using their mobile phone, eating MacDonalds, then pleading poverty. Get a job. No qualifications? There's a surprise. Of course the school was against you as well.

just keep appling the pressure, you will get there in the end. The most important thing is to remember not to give them an inch.
