Both are fantastic dogs. Personally, I would get a Golden Retriever.
German Shepherd information:

The German Shepherd is very loyal, confident and smart. The GS is a very fast learner, if given the time to go to obedience classes. When you get your GS, you should socialize it more than what you would other dogs as they can be very wary of strangers when they are older. If your GS is very aggressive to you or other people/animals, you know that you did not get your dog from a reputable breeder. It is VERY important that you DO get your GS from a reputable breeder as they can get hereditory diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These dogs are not suitable for people who don't have the time or effort to properly socialize and train them. The GS is prone to health problems such as: hip and elbow dysplasia, blood disorders, epilepy, digestive problems, chronic eczema, keratitis, flea allergies and dwarfism. The GS loves a challenge. They need a lot of exercise to be a happy dog. They need a brush once a day and do shed bits of fur all throughout the year. They shood get bathed twice a year ONLY. They can live up to 13 years although they can live to 16 in some cases.

Golden Retriever information:

The GR is a very well-mannered, intelligent, loyal dog. They are very easily trained as a puppy. They are always gentle and and patient with children, even when they are young. It is a very active, loving, family dog. GR's enjoy pleasing their owner(s) so obedience training can be fun for them. They are fantastic with other dogs and household animals. The GR is a terrible watchdog and will most likely run up and lick the persons face rather then attack. They can make good guarding dogs though. This breed of dog must be with it's family to be happy. If they are left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive. They can be distractable sometimes. They love to go swimming! They are prone to health problems such as: hip and elbow dysplasia and congenital eye defects. Parents should be tested for heart problems and Von Willebrand's disease. Skin allergies are VERY common in GR's and need immediate veterinary attention. The GR needs daily exercise, but is likely to retrieve balls and toys so exercising is easy. Do not overfeed him/her as (s)he can become overweight very fast. They are easy to groom, contrary to what people think or say. Comb and brush the GR with a firm bristle brush once a day. Dry shampoo regularly, but bathe when necessary. The GR is an average shedder.

* GS = German Shepherd.
* GR = Golden Retriever.

It depends on the use and what you want to use it for if it is for friendship then you may prefer a golden retriever but when it co mes to security a german shepherd is the best bet (it can kill a wolf) so chose depending on your purpose of purchase.
But german shepherds should not be left for a long time to fully show their potentials they are easily trained in obedience German Shepherd Dogs are often used as working dogs in many capacities, including search and rescue (SAR) dogs, military dogs, police dogs, or guard dogs. They are also used as assistance dogs (particularly guide dogs), though not as much as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers.
Today the Golden Retriever is one of the most common family dogs as it is easy to handle, very tolerant and does not require very much from the owner(s), other than regular exercise, food and veterinary check-ups. It is often affectionately known as a Golden or Yellow Retriever. Golden Retrievers are usually compatible with people and other dogs. It will bark when startled but other than that it makes a poor watchdog due to its friendly nature. Golden Retrievers are particularly valued for their high level of sociability towards people.

German shepherds can be extremely aggressive towards other dogs, especially when both are males, and can be overly protective. Golden retrievers do not have as serious a problem with this. Both breeds are extremely smart and also the 2 main breeds used by the most successful dog breeding program there is-Guide Dogs for the Blind

Both are fantastic breeds, and I have been exposed to both, although I am not a professional by any means. I had a GSD for 11 years and currently have a new puppy. GSD's are fantastic and have the capacity to learn amazing skills. They are very loyal, protective, intelligent and once their loyalty is given, it is yours for life. But they are also strong minded dogs and require a firm hand and plenty of obedience training. Socialization is HUGE. Our first was great with us, and people he knew but we dropped the ball on socializing him and we couldn't bring him too many places and we had to maintain a distance from children. They can be very aggressive if not trained properly and some are VERY high energy. Ours was very destructive when left alone (again, we dropped the ball on crating him, once he was house broken, we stopped). GDS's are working dogs and they need something to do. Agility, doggie socialization classes, etc will help as well 3 long walks a day but from my experience you really have to be committed. Goldens are less aggressive in general. I've never had one but the vet I worked for had a beautiful female that was in the clinic every day and was very friendly, social and gentle. They can also be high energy though and will require plenty of exercise and training is must with any breed. I've seen Goldens that a mellow to the point of boring and hyper to the point of being intolerable. But like the GSD they are a wonderful breed and would thrive "doing" something. You tend to see Golden's (at least in my experience) with families that have small children, less than a GSD, although again, the properly socialized GSD is wonderful with a child and will defend it with its life. If you can, try to spend time with both breeds and do lots of research. Contact breeders or breed clubs and ask about personality traits as it relates to your situation. Puppies are a tremendous amount of work, which I am finding out with my new little guy--more than I remember! It's not just walking them--there's house breaking, obedience classes, socialization, feeding, cleaning up after them. I'm sure you will get some much better answers than mine but I hope this helps!!

i have both and they are awesome dogs.if u have children ,then the golden retriever is better as they are very friendly and loyal.but GR's need a lot of attention and exercise.they are not very good watchdogs as they are very friendly.
but if u want more of a guard dog,theGSD is better.but they are more diff.to train.the goldens are easier.but u should hire a profesional trainer as both dogs are very strong.
whichever one u get,get it from reputed breedersas they are prone to many problems.get the certificates of both parents and have a vet check the parents and the puppy for heriditary diseases.

GSD
Country of Origin: Germany.

Size: Shoulder height: 55 - 65 cm (21.5 - 25.5 inches).

Temperament: Their territoriality makes them among the least likely of breeds to run away. Unwanted visitors are stopped. This breed gets along fine with children and other animals, provided proper socialization has taken place.

Care: During shedding a special comb is needed to remove dead hairs.

Training: German Shepherds are eager pupils and are quick to get the hang of things. They are most responsive to your voice.

Activity: German Shepherds are happiest when doing some type of work, such as agility, obedience, or police trials. Over-exercising when young can cause damage to growing bones, joints, and muscles.

Temperament: This dog gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets. It can be belligerent with unknown visitors.

Care: Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required. Make sure the ears are kept clean.

Training: Obedience classes are recommended. They are very sensitive to harsh treatment, so excessive strictness is not recommended. Golden Retrievers remember what they learn for the rest of their lives.

Activity: Golden Retrievers have above-average needs for exercise, although they will adapt themselves to the exercise habits of your family.

hope this helps.

Whether you get either one be sure to get them at a Golden or German Shepard rescue group. Don't pay for one from a breeder! There are perfectly good dogs at these rescues who need a loving home. Don't give breeders your cash.

Just search of rescues in your state.
