In the early 1980s when doctors first began to notice a fatal disease which mostly affected gay men, some called it GRID for Gay Related Immune Deficiency. Later the name was changed to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; the first recorded use of the term AIDS was in July 1982).
