Retinal detachment occurs when the light sensitive layer inside the eye somehow peels off of the inside of the eyeball (often through some sort of impact). The result is often blindness in certain areas where the retina has detached. As of my most recent knowledge, treatment often comes in the form of a laser to essentially re-attach the retina to the back of the eyeball.

in laymen's terms...it's when the part of your eye that "sees the light" for some reason pulls away from the other tissue it's attached to. normally caused by a hard hit to the head it can be repaired with a laser if caught in time.
