You can try it at the aeroport but you might NOT get the cheapest or non flight at all..Depends upon the season you want to travel since the Peak-one is quite full already.

There are a few choices at the airport but maybe get a good idea of the price you are getting first, Orient Thai is a good airline and flies very cheap. I paid 1700 Baht per one way. Air Asia is not bad but heard that it's quite prone to delays. Nok Air is owned by THai Airways and it's quite ok. Bangkok Air is the new boutique airline (whatever tat means) and you can get tickets for all these at the airport but if it'll be the cheapest...I'm not sure. Coming to November till February it will be very crowded in Phuket so maybe it's better to book your flights early as Europe will be invading Phuket by the plane-loads!!!
