A Web service is a program that receives input from other programs (usually called "consumers") and produces output for use by those other programs, with input and output being delivered over the Web.

Unlike traditional scripts that output human-readable HTML, Web services usually output in some more machine-friendly format, such as CSV, XML, or JSON.

To make a Web service secure, you need to transport data over secure HTTP instead of traditional HTTP.
