My friend, today, everyone with a camera wants to be a "professional." Let me caution you: it is NOT easy.

First, knowing how to use your camera is like knowing how to walk; a lot of us can do that. You must be VERY well acquainted with your camera and your CRAFT. You must have knowledge on lighting, posing, cropping, etc., and you must have experience. The best place to sharpen your skills is in school (yes, SCHOOL) and afterward it would help you immensely if you were to do an apprenticeship for 2 years with a well-known, experienced, established professional photographer so that you can learn about the business side of photography, and also learn how to handle emergencies, and difficut clients and difficult situations. Knowledge is (earning) POWER in photography.

Guess what? You may KNOW how to use your camera and you may have "experience" but you also need one thing that come naturally to each person: talent.

There's one more factor that you must have if you are ever going to be a professional photographer: PASSION. Talent, skills and experience won't amount to anything unless you have the passion to persevere the many obstacles and problems that will come your way, and the tenacity to stick it out during the lean times. You must be creative, and that's where skills and experience come in. HOW do you develop this? Go to school and learn as much as you can!

Just because you take photos that your friends and family "like" or say "are very good" does not mean that you are pro quality level. I am not trying to discourage you; I am trying to make you aware that there's more to being a photographer than you can imagine, it's more than just taking photos, too. It's knowing how to handle a business, who to procure contracts, how to handle assistants, and how to deal in a very competitive world.

You have no idea how difficult the competition is. Imagine, here in the USA, for example, there are easily 200,000 students graduating from universities and other photography programs... and that's how it's been for a number of years. The same goes with England and France. Tell me, do you REALLY feel competent enough to compete with those graduates? The competition is so fierece that many decide to specialize in certain areas of photography (Wedding and portrait and sports are among the most popular, and then there's photojournalism and commercial and glamor...). Many of them take jobs doing such things as running photography shops, salespersonnel in camera stores, or teachers in varying places. Some even become technicians in photo development shops!

Go to school. I've been involved in photography (and have done landlord/tenant court evidence photography) since 1964 and I honestly can't compare myself with those school graduates.

I am in my seventies and time is going by so quickly I haven't time to do all the photography I want to do. I can't bend down as I used to and when I do get down there to photograph that bug I can't get up again. I need a powerful diopter to see thru the viewfinder and a caddy to carry my heavy dslr plus this big tripod. (That's my wife). If I sit at my computer too long my back hurts and if I stand up I can't see the screen. Hey this is not the poor me's. I love photography in spite of the challenges and aches & pains. I am living in the most wonderful era of creativity in history and if Beethoven could compose his last symphony while blind I can still create good photos and I'm going to do it till I die Barry

What do you mean as a profession? Sell the photographs?
Because becoming a professional photographer requires studies and experience, you don't just become one by uploading some pictures on the net. Professional means owner of diploma. And if one has a diploma, one knows how to promote his pictures.
You need to know people at higher places who are willing to suggest you as a photographer, you need to work as one (magazines, newspapers, studios...)
