It is not unusual to feel sad, blue, or depressed from time to time. Sadness is a normal reaction to loss, life’s struggles, or injured self-esteem. Sometimes, however, these feelings are so continually intense that they interfere with one’s ability to think, work, eat, sleep, enjoy being with others, or care for him or herself. When someone experiences a debilitating depression and feels unable to do anything about it, other people need to pay attention, even if the depressed person does not reach out for help.

Depression is an internal “stress state.” To an outsider, the symptoms seem to represent a form of either agitation or withdrawal. But inside, each depressed person experiences the condition differently. The severity of symptoms varies by individual and over time. Some people exhibit a few of the following symptoms; some have many:

a] Persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood
b] Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
c] Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
d] Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
e] Decreased energy, fatigue
f] Difficulty concentrating, remembering and making decisions
g] Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
h] Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
i] Restlessness, irritability
j] Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
k] Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts

if u are suffering from any three of the above pls consult ur doctor

I'm not to sure how you would know if you were suffering from it, but in someone else you will notice that they are quite, won't talk much it kinda looks like there half asleep and they look lost. Best thing to do is to try to get them to talk but don't force it, they need to overcome thier deamons before they will really open up. Just stay close and make sure they know your there for them.

iv'e been plauged by the black dog for years.i would'nt admit it for along time but i finally accepted it (although i hate it).i don't take meds for it and have no support to help me through the hard days.being older now and contending with an ongoing illness has isolated me from society.people don't want to know sick these days.the greater majority of society are sellfish and in our cultures family or friends are disgarded if they become ill.my way of dealing with it is to isolate myself as i can become desperate for friedship in these times which can induce embarassment in public.i'm not talking about violence, that never occurs,i mean saying stupid things that you realise later may have given people the impression that your very imature.so my problemin dealing with the black dog is esculated because i cannot take meds to help control it.to answer your question from my point of view as i have said, isolation and afighting will to survivealso reapetedly reminding myself it will pass.thinking of my three grands helps alot also.all the best. zita

Losing interest in the things you enjoy. Changes in appetite either overeating or less eating. Dimished sex drive. Feelings of worthlessness and despair. And yes, sleeping a lot ... difficult to get out of bed.

my mother had it. And she was always very sad, everything made her cry, she ached, she hated her job, nothing made her happy, she always argued with my siblings, if you did something nice for her she was never pleased, and she slept alot.
