How To Wash Net Curtains

2016-10-06 06:46:24 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

A lot of good tips here but I think the special curtain whitener is probably the best. I wanted to say that the blue bag was was sort of dye which gave a blue tinge to the white material and fooled the eye into thinking it was whiter. They material comes from what is now Cumbria and they were made in village called Backbarrow. When you drove through the village the pavements round the factory were streaked with blue and the guys who worked there came out of the factory blue all over. I don't think that today Health and Safety would allow it to happen as their lungs must have been lined with blue dye as well

I had some nets up while we were decorating, they got rather grubby, but as we live near a busy road we needed to keep something up at the windows.

My mum always said, leave them to soak in cold water overnight, then wash them in luke warm water in the bath by hand with a little washing up liquid or handwashing liquid or powder, then rinse on a delicate spin in the washing machine.

This is ok if they are not too bad. However, i would stress; avoid very hot water or a fast spin as if they are nylon which most nets are, they get so creased. You cannot iron them on hot, so they end up ruined.

Just put them on a 30 wash in the machine on delicates for example, at least they will be clean.

i would always suggest new nets, the others never came back as white as before. Nets are not too expensive, so maybe get one for each room at a time etc.

I've tried the stuff for net curtains and its ok, you get about 4 sachets for a pound. I got better results by pre soaking in a warm solution of biological powder, then rinsing, then using the net stuff.
But the best result I got were from a product made for lingerie! It really did work, I think its made by Dylon. You keep the water temperature warm and soak for about an hour.
I got it from Asda, I guess most of the supermarkets stock the same range.

This works for any white curtains......Dissolve a cup of automatic dishwashing powder, such as Cascade in very warm water in ur washer, add curtains and let soak for approx. 1/2 hr, then add a small amt. of laundry detergent and let the cycle run thru on gentle. Whitens everytime.

RIT has a number of products you add to the soak and/or wash cycle.
You can still purchase bluing. I prefer Mrs. Stewart's concentrated liquid bluing. It is available at Kroger in the laundry section, for more information contact:

I have found that if I follow the cleaning instructions on the label of all my clothing, it works pretty well. Some white fabrics cannot be bleached, as they will turn gray or wear out quickly, so I use a color brightener on them. Dull whites that will tolerate bleach will whiten right up again if you bleach them. Good luck.

Loads of things you could try, most Supermarkets have stuff specially for this purpose, and I've tried the one where you get four sachets for £1 - they are brilliant if your nets aren't too grubby. I wouldn't recommend bleach though - I've tried this and real lace just turns to grey!
