living their own dead bodies and looking at all the mourners with reassuring smiles?

If so, how would that change the whole equation on the belief of life after death?

Firstly I think death would not intrigue us so much. The unknown aspect of death is what makes it so interesting and scary to us. It would be something we understand and get used to. If the souls seemed happy then we'd all be waiting for death, but if they seem to be in pain or in despair then I think, obviously, we would be pretty distraught about that. It would ruin any ideas that we have about our dead, loved ones being in peace and we would have to worry about being this way one day ourselves. It all depends. It could really make this life really happy or it could make it miserable, even without the fear of the unknown that death brings about.

But we don't see that and we have no reason to believe in that, death itself is not something to be feared, there is no conciousness afterward and no suffering, it's the process of death that might be a genuine cause for concern, nobody wants a painful or distressing death and we don't want others to have to endure this either..

Yep, if everyone were able to see spirits death would no longer have the same meaning.
