It is normal for any dog to smell someone's crotch. It is simply a way for your dog to identify people so hitting it would not be the right thing to do (no matter what (s)he does).

If you really find it embarressing and you want him/her to stop, some basic obedience classes will teach him/her what 'no' means.

Put meat in your crotch, and he'll sniff yours instead? Honestly, using a harness or Hal-T, snap back on it's lead when he goes in for the nuzzle. And as said by others, a stern "NO!" should be accompaning it.

One suggestion, is to also stop it before it starts by getting it to sit/stay before it gets close enough and reward it with a treat when it does.

swat him on the nose say no sternly and loud enough to let him know your serious then make him go off by himself. either outside or where ever you make him spend time alone in the house.

thats what my friend did with her dog. he kept doing the same. didnt' take him long to stop actually. he got so bummed out having to sit there by himself.

It isn't going to happen, thats how dogs say hello, how they identify people. Normal dog behavior.

It's instinctual, but I've had success with a firm "NO", and treats when they comply.
