G'day D Waddell,

Thank you for your question.

The Private Pilot License or certificate is the most common in the US. It enables you to command an aircraft (subject to appropriate ratings) and gives you authority under visual flight rules. However, it does not allow you to have a career as you cannot command an aircraft for money.

A Commercial Pilot Licence is what you need as a minimum if you want a career. It requires a higher standard of training and enables you to operate an aircraft for pay especially if you obtain an instrument rating. You must demonstrate a capacity to operate a complex aircraft to obtain this license.

An Airline Pilot's License (APL) is the highest qualification and enables you to fly for an airline. You need at least 1500 hours of flight time in order to qualify for an APL.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

PPL = Private Pilots Licence

CPL = COmmercial Pilots Licence

You get your PPL first and work your way up, talk to flying scools and airlines about the career path for pilots.
