When I download it, it appers to download and install. It even puts the shortcut on my desktop. Then when I open the shortcut and try to run it, the download window opens again like I never downloaded the thing.

did you reboot after you uninstalled messenger ? maybe run your virus scan , after you updated it.. when all else fails, uninstall and re-install again .. bummer eh..
