1 Kilo calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 Kilo gram of water 1 degree celsuis. How much energy you need to lose weight depends on what the weight consists of, for example fats and alcohol burn off about 75% slower than carbohydrates.

If ur walking u use 80% fat calories so it means,80 calories comes from fat while 20 calories come from Carbs.
So the equation is :
1 gram of fat = 9 calories
1 gram of carbs = 4-5 calories
So fat grams u burn : 80/9= about 8.5 or more...
carb grams u burn : 20\5= 4 or little more...

There are approx 7700 calories in a kilo of fat

so there are 77 calories for every 10 grams of fat.

so for every excess 100 calories burnt in theory approx 13g should be lost.

although protien (your muscle mass) weighs more than fat but is less energy dense, only 40 calories for every 10g

so if you burn 100 calories of muscle energy you should loose in theory about 25g of weight.
Burning muscle is a bad option as the more muscle you loose the more your metabolisim slows down, increasing the amount of fat your body stores.

when loosing body weight it is individual circumstances that will determine where the weight loss comes from (muscle or fat) Rest assured no matter what there will be a combination of both but the percentage of each will differ from individual to individual.

Things like genetic make up (the biggest factor) how many meals a day you eat, where the calories ingested come from eg. carbs protien fat, do you use weights, if so how heavy and regularly you train, do you do cardio exercise etc...

hope ive somewhat answered your question.

Calories are a measure of energy, and not mass, so it cannot be converted unless you know precisely what you are burning.

Also, if you are excercising, you will temporarily loose extra grams in water lost (perspiration).

If I remember correctly:
1 gram of fat is 37kJ
1 gram of charbohydrate: 16kJ
1 gram of protein is 17kJ

kJ=kilojoule
1 calorie=4.18J

It's hardest to burn fat
