tell him how you will use it and show him that it is going to good use

Thank him for the generous gift, tell him exactly what you are going to use it for, or how you plan to save it for the future. Share some of your life with him, your grades, your hobbies, your favorite teacher, something. Say, thought you would like to know I am doing really well in school this year, I should make honor role. Or, Dad and I are working on building a model plane this year, just like you and he used to do.Or do some honesty: as you know, Mom and I are having a little financial trouble, since the divorce, and this money will go a long ways buying stuff for school. or, I am getting the apartment ready for Mary to join me after the wedding. There won't be much of a honeymoon, just a trip to wherever for a couple days, but the money will sure make it a nicer trip!
You get the picture. Grandfather will love it if you include him in your life, even if it is just written in a Hallmark card.
What a nice Grandpa!

Grandfather (or what you call him),

I really do appreciate your generosity. Honestly, it makes me proud to be part of a family that reaches out to help its members, and I can only hope that some day I will be able to help my grandchildren as you have helped me.

I can assure you that the thought is treasured, and I'll do my best to do the right thing with the money you've entrusted to me.

Thank you again,
you

Sounds cheesy to some, but this is the kind of thing I write just to let them know that I do appreciate the family kindness aspect. As long as you are going to use the money in a wise manner, you can mention that fact.
He knows he gave you money - so don't dance around it. Thank him for it.

Good luck!

Dear Grandpa,

Thanks for the cash, it came handy. I just want you to be assured that I won't spend it on edible lingerie or dope. No promises on tattoo or piercing :p

I can not lie to you, some of this money will surely go to alcohol and ... Well, maybe I can lie a bit. Or hide things, that wouldn't be lying right?

Just a draft. You can use it and/or try to make it more personal.

"Dear Grandfather:

"Thank you for your generous gift of $1000L. I plan on using these funds (for my university education, by investing in a savings account, for the down payment on my future house, for my wedding, for my honeymoon, etc. etc. pick one...)

"I am thankful for the blessing of a grandfather like you ! Through the years there have been so many ways that you have shown your love and that you have cared for me, and although I haven't always shown it, I want you to know that I appreciate them.

"Love,

"Ratty2601"

If this is the information that you are looking for, please rate it ! thank you.
