on understanding existence manifested as co-existence at all levels - we humans feel obligated to relate with everyone, and give. it is neither being 'selfless' or 'selfish' - it is being your 'true self'. Both selfish and selfless people haven't been able to realize harmony in human relationships. The so-called self-less people of religion - have caused all divisiveness. The materialist selfishness treats everyone and everything for its benefit and profit, which also doesn't realize harmony.

By being our true-self - I mean - understanding human, understanding humanity, understanding human goal, understanding human order, understanding co-existence between humans. Understanding leads to living or realizing that understanding.

Well it depends upon whether you believe that prayer, like hands, can be used to help others. If prayer can help the world, then using your hands and using prayer are two ways to do the same thing, help mankind. Of course, if you dont believe in prayer then it would be better to help with your hands I think.

Actions speak louder than words. and "Faith without works is dead"
There will always be some level of self centered motivation in people's behavior. I don't think anyone can be completely self centered or completely selfless.
Someone who does the right thing without knowing it is better than someone who knows the right thing to do but doesn't.

Most properly socialized people get pleasure from helping others...so even when you're helping, you're being selfish. That doesn't make the help any less helpful, though.

I have no proof for this but I believe that we are judged by our actions and our works - not by our faith and prayer. So, yes, I think "hands that help" are more important by a landslide.
