right click the AVI File go to properties, click the summary tab and there u can see if this file is compressed using some codec or not ..

Win Media Player not need any more codec for avi extension file.
your AVI can't opened cause sometime it files broken file.
try to download again from it source(if you download it).

yup, i think you can right click in windows media player the file and it will display what codec is missing, there's also a web link where you can download the codecs needed. install the file and you can now view your movie.
