The Berlin Wall divided a COUNTRY...and it was to keep people from escaping, not entering illegally! Mexico has called our decision to finally take action against the illegal immigration 'distasteful'. Since when is it distasteful to enforce an age-old and widely known law? In my opinion, it is highly distasteful to defend an illegal action and act truly horrified when asked to abide. First of all, its not like there hasn't ALWAYS been an avenue available to become an American citizen. Second of all, it has been the nature of a soveign country since countries have existed to keep foreigners out...and there are reasons for this. Mexico has immigration laws, yet they fail to respect the American's right to defend their borders? Im tired of hearing how important it is for me to learn spanish when some illegals come over here and work for 20+ years and dont bother to even learn the basics of English. It is an issue of respect to the country and to native Americans.

Yeah, with all due respect, Im fully aware of the history of our border states. My decendants were from Germany...but im not crying about the American Government not allowing them to immigrate ILLEGALLY. And just as I am legal, your friends in New Mexico are too. I will disregard your answer. Thank you.

Both were wrong
Hope some day you get information about this issue, before you express your opinion, would be great

The fence on the border cannot be compared to the Berlin wall. Such comparisons are just Mexican histrionics. The Mexican gov't realizes the American gravy train is about to end. No more exporting their poverty problems to the Norte Americanos. Keep in mind though who brought this about, the will of the American people. The majority of American politicians will try to drag this thing out and never actually build the thing. Pressure has to be maintained.

The wall isn't even designed to keep people from entering our country... it is designed to keep people from entering our country illegally.
There is only one purpose to compare the two: to vilify the U.S.
I am all in favor of making it more difficult for someone to enter this country illegally. However, I am also in favor of making it easier for people to enter this country legally. We aren't addressing the problem by building this wall. The problem is that so many people want to come here and have their own piece of the American dream. Why don't we let them? This country was founded on immigration. We used to tell others, "Give us your tired, your poor," now we just say, "No Vacancy." Let the Mexicans come here, but let them do it legally. Make it easy enough that they won't WANT to sneak across and face deportation!

"and it was to keep people from escaping, not entering illegally!"
yes, but who's to say that a border fence won't become such a device?
i personally think the comparison is sever hyperbole, if such a comparison is being made, but nevertheless i can see where it comes from.
"It is an issue of respect to the country and to native Americans."
I would like to share an interesting point on this. Where I live, in New Mexico, there there are families that have been here since the 1500s. Guess what? They're of ... Spanish descent! Remember the Conquistadors, buddy. Anyway, Spanish-speakers (i.e, Spaniards) were here a lot earlier than the Anglos. So, having said that, why is speaking Spanish any less native than speaking English?

No comparison. We are not preventing Americans to go out of the U.S. We are preventing illegal immigrants and probably terrorist from penetrating to probably overcome this country by illegal and violent means.
