Hi Hannah, knowing your budget upfront is the best way to approach digital camera buying because there are so many options at different prices.

For under $250 I'd recommend one of the Canon Powershots. Either of the newer models, A530 (4MP) or A540 (6MP) will easily come in at or under your budget. They're both currently available on Amazon for about $130 and $170 respectively. That'll allow you to have some money left over to get a good large memory card, look for a 1GB or 2GB. Sandisk Ultra II cards are fairly cheap now, under $50 for a 1GB.

Although either camera will get you excellent image quality the biggest advantage with the 540 would probably be the larger lcd display at back - 2.5" versus 1.8".

Dpreview.com has a useful side-by-side comparison chart [0] and is generally a good resource to research digital cameras.

I usually buy my camera equipment online. Amazon is a good, reliable place. Also places like B&H Photo & Video or Adorama. There are lots of scam stores out there though. Some of them even advertise at the back of major photography magazines. So outside of those three, I'd exercise caution and do research online. Check sites like reseller-ratings.com and epinions.com

all of them take effective photos for particular! i'd stay faraway from the type that do to many stuff... purchase one which in basic terms takes photos in case you imagine you want a video digicam then purchase one. difficulty-loose media (flash reminiscence) is important purchase to new of a digicam and also you will pay one hundred-150 for particular reminiscence sticks (wait 4-5 months and same media would drop to 30 money) make certain it takes prevalent batteries with the optimal mega pixels you are able to arise with the money for. in case you get stuck up into the hype of shopping for a Sony digicam then save an oulet mall after the dep. save, you'll locate an same digicam for 500 at (suitable purchase) and one hundred seventy 5 on the outlet.

Your camera should be the Cannon powershot Sd600, under $250, 6.0 megapixles, and a damn good recording system and length.
