The dog probably recognizes your own cats and therefore leaves them alone. I'm not sure your dog tried to kill the cat because a dog often would be able to kill a cat quickly. Many dogs would probably be able to kill the cat long before you could get bit.

About getting bit, the cat was probably terrified and instinctively bit. I would at least wash the area where you were bit. Hey, that reminds me, I told an Amish girl about a week ago that I hope her finger gets better soon. Were you working in a store in Pennsylvania two Saturdays ago with a cloth bandage or something on your finger?

Because your two cats are part of her pack and the stray is not. It trespassed into her territory.

That is what dogs do.
