Interesting question! Given that equality negates the basic premise of all three major religions--Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--the practice of equality in any society immediately clashes with these religions and makes their adherents out of sync with societal norms.
In religion, practitioners are superior to nonbelievers, the rich are superior to the poor, the powerful are superior to the weak, the majority is superior to the minority, married people are superior to unmarried ones, and men are superior to women. All of these tenets are diametricaly opposed to equality, minority rights, and the entire list of concepts that drove the founders of the USA.
Oh well . . .
