I own a 1990 jeep wrangler yj with a 4cyl 2.5 engine and ax/5 transmission. I would like to replace the 4cyl with a 6cyl and would like to know the best way to go about this? Is there a 6cyl that fits in better then the others? Would I also need to change the trans and all the wireing? Or can I keep everything else the same Thanks

the best 6 cyl money can buy is the 4.0 L powertech (jeep) engine. scrapyards usually retail these for around 200-300 bucks. find a late model (98-01 are good) jeep. these engines lived under the hoods of cherokees, tj's yj's (older), and some base model grands. some scrapyards pre-pull the engines. if it's possible, stay away from the head on collision jeeps (for obvious reasons) these engines may look ok, but they have probably been stressed (either mounts or internal components). a late model 4 litre has a better intake manifold, which i've heard is good for a bit more power. the engine is strong, reliable, and has plenty of guts. the motor mounts should go in pretty easy... cuz it is a jeep engine. if you decide not to get the 4.0 litre (don't), i reccommend sticking to an in line as opposed to a v6. in lines are smoother, and produce more power. the v is just a space saver. you don't need to save space since the 4.0 was designed for the wrangler, so no sweat fitting it. i'm buying a 4.0 soon for one of my older jeeps, they are really good. hope this helps.

the 4L is the way to go, get a wreck with this motor and all the parts you need will be there , mounts, rad, computer, tranny , etc. all Jeep 4L motors are basically the same, its the wiring etc. that change from year and model

way cheaper to have your 4cyl rebuilt but if you can do an engine swap yourself then go for it otherwise some mechanic is going to rip you a new one
