It is true you can walk and see the main sites, however there are so many sites in Rome. I would recommend getting a travel book of the mainsites you want to see and then buying a pass for the public transportation.

You can get a pass in the mainstation for 3 day, weekly, or monthly. You can also get them at practically any newstand. With that you'll be able to use both lines of the subway, and all the buses. It's totally worth it!

the main inexpensive way isn't turning here and there like a three years previous baby in an amusement park who needs to purpose each and every allure, yet understanding that Italy is a extensive u . s . a . with important distances between one place and yet another, and that many places in Italy are so complicated and exciting that could desire to deserve better than a seem. the main inexpensive, and likewise the terrific way, is staying able or in few places for a existence like time and taking section in this place or those places without hurry. whether you stumbled on an extremely affordable thank you to place your plan into outcomes, what might you get on the tip? a huge worry, a huge exhaustion, assorted time wasted in trains, perplexed and overlapping reminiscence when you consider which you will have had a rushed seem of assorted issues while not having the time of awareness something of anybody. And besides you would be a techniques from understanding Italy, you will have only scratched the exterior of... not even of Italy, yet of the main touristy places of it, probably those you have commonly heard. the two Naples and Pisa, themselves, might deserve a visit (Pisa isn't "only a tower", that's a severe high quality city, nevertheless maximum folk pay attention only the tower); i think of the priority isn't "what", yet "how" traveling.

The tourist sites are all located within walking distance, though walking from central Rome to the Vatican is a bit of a haul.

Depending on how long you're staying, look into getting a metrobus pass--you can get one for three days, a week, or a month and it's valid for all the buses and metros in Rome for that time period. A three-day pass is I believe about 15 euro.

Also, take a look at www.romapass.it for information on the "Roma Pass" which is a travel pass that combines a three-day metrobus pass and free entry into two museums.

buon viaggio!

As others have said I suggest that you walk in Rome.
I used to live there and most of the time I moved from one place to the other by feet.
Why? Because:
- any other way of moving is expensive
- there is a terrible traffic, so if you think to rent a car, bike, bycicle, moped,... it's too stressing
- public transportation is poor because of traffic problems and because due to the fact that Roma is an archaeological site, they managed to build only 3 lines of subway and they cannot build anything else or they risk to destroy ancient walls or villas that are buried
- the weather is beautiful and most of the time it's warm
- even though it takes a while to move from one site to the other during your journey you may find many beautiful things like fountains, patios, statues, buildings,... that your guide may not even have mentioned.
I also suggest you to walk from Trinità dei Monti to the Vatican city. This is one of the most interesting walks.
Enjoy!

Use the busses. I never got to use the subways but I'm sure they're good. Try to avoid the taxis. Although it did make for an adventure! It's like there's no rules on the road there!
