if so, why do they need them - spirits surely don't need any airlift to get up and down from Heaven ...?

No. The Bible never had any mention of them having wings. It wasn't until the Rennesance Art period in Europe when an artist drew an Angel with wings. That started it all.

Commander, Those weren't Angels, those were the Cherubim and Serephim.

Interesting question. Most of our impressions of angels come from classic paintings and more recently, movies and television, don't they?

Most of the time in the Bible, people who witnessed angels fell on their faces out of fear and awe. Would anyone ever really want to meet one of these creatures?

One passage I found that describes angels with wings: Isaiah 6:2.

A human torso wouldn't be very aerodynamic would it? The wings would have to be very large and awfully strong to be of practical use to a human-sized person.

I remember Anne Rice once wrote about the angelic rebellion in "Memnoch: the Devil". She wrote that one of the reasons for the angels rebelling against God was that He was creating humans who looked like angels without wings, and birds that had wings like angels. To them (as she wrote it) it seemed obscene and they no longer felt favored by God.

Translation of the holy Quran:

YUSUFALI: Praise be to Allah, Who created (out of nothing) the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels, messengers with wings,- two, or three, or four (pairs): He adds to Creation as He pleases: for Allah has power over all things.

PICKTHAL: Praise be to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who appointeth the angels messengers having wings two, three and four. He multiplieth in creation what He will. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.

SHAKIR: All praise is due to Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Maker of the angels, messengers flying on wings, two, and three, and four; He increases in creation what He pleases; surely Allah has power over all things.

no. The Angels described in the bible did not have wings but looked like normal human beings.
The wings were added by painters that knew a little bit about symbology. the halos and wings were symbols of spiritual purity.

Yes, and did you know that every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings? Well, not many people know, that when a mouse trap sets, an angel sets on fire.

Probably not. Wings are probably just part of a visual / artistic representation of angels.

Where did you get the idea that angels have wings?

Now, maybe Cherubim and Seraphim ... that is a different matter!!

actually, yes they do, to distinguish themselves from humans--it's the same as demons having animal attributes like cloven hooves tails horns, etc.--god made rules for when they could become material so that they wouldn't be mistaken for humans after the whole sodom and gamorrah thing

they do have wings and differ in number from even one angel to another , and they are not spirits , they are different honored creatures who worship god alone.
