DEPORT!! Our law officials should be allowed to check the legal status of anyone they suspect of being illegal. No one should be able to hire them. They should not be able to get welfare, subsidized housing, food stamps, free or low cost medical. No one should be able to rent housing to them. They will leave on their own and less will come here if their incentives for coming are removed. We also need to continue to build our fence and strengthen our border security.

Our borders are porous. There are zillions of employers who feel its okay to hire illegal immigrants and pay them under the table. The illegal immigrants place a burden on our infrastructure. That's the mess part. Unemployment is quite low, so it isn't a matter of "stealing jobs."

Now lets talk about the human part.

The people who come here illegally come here for a better life. Many have families and kids. They want their kids to have a better life. Call any property management company in LA and they'll tell you, the illegal immigrants are the best tenants. It's very common for the whole family to come to the property manager on the first of the month and pay the rent in full, cash. These people don't want to leach off the system, they want the same things everyone wants - a chance to pursue happiness and a good life.

Frankly, the vast majority of illegal immigrants are good people. The only mess that needs to be solved are tax issues and the cost of services. That's fairly easy to fix - offer either easier citizenship or easier green cards and correct the practice of cheating on both taxes and wages by businesses. Businesses claim they'd go out of business if they had to pay a fair wage. They probably would if the law was changed overnight - so we'd have to faze in wage and tax increases. It wouldn't be pretty, but it needs to be done.

People - places like LA are roughly 50% Hispanic - lots are citizens, lots aren't. Our borders and policies have been porous for years. It's time we did what is compassionate and right.

Amazing! The sheer violence stated in some of the answers to these questions amazes me. What kind of society do we hope to have if answers of this sort are how we behave as citizens.. It is an economic issue, and I think that limitations should be placed on people trying to immigrate legally at this time, as well as more border enforcement, however, if people are already here, many for many, many years they are a part of our society now. Most are gainfully employed, with taxes being deducted from their wages. Those taxes go into our federal and state coffers and help many who are not illegal.

At the rate that we are going now, we will not have to worry about any more illegal aliens trying to come to the United States. With our citizens hated in many parts of the world because of our political policies with other countries soon maybe no one will want to come here and be hated with the rest of us.

All illegal immigrants should be promptly deported. I think the ER or Health Department should be required to notify INS of illegal women, who are pregnant! Illegals should not have the same rights as citizens. These people need to be deported and have their children, at home; instead of placing unfair burden, on the tax payers.

Legal immigrants are fine with me. They deserve to be welcomed and respected.

Which immigration mess is that? The current smoke screen? The guest worker (bracero) program that Bush was pushing a few weeks ago? The blatantly racial outbursts on this site? The latter should probably be the place to start.

We really don't need to spend massive amounts of money to deport the illegals. All we need to do, is cut off all government subsidized aid to anyone who is not a legal citizen, or does not speak English. No cash, no food stamps, and no medicaid. They will either starve or go home. Done deal!

I agree with Ruby and Gokart. Take away their reasons for entering the U.S., e-mail, phone and write our representatives and VOTE out the incumbents and vote IN new people who are for the American citizens and against illegal immigration.

We need to enforce our laws and let our representatives know how we feel. Vote for the representatives who vote the way you want them to...not how they say they will vote, but how they ACTUALLY VOTE. You can find out by typing on the internet: say "dewine voter scorecard" and you can locate info on how your rep voted. Just replace the word dewine with the name of your representative.

Keep attending city council meetings...keep reminding them that you don't support illegal immigration...if enough people, the majority, make it known that they don't support it, then city/county/ state will work towards trying to stop it. Write your local paper, too!

We need to do what Eisenhower did, start major deportations. Most will get scared and go back on their own, those that don't,we ship them to the southern most part of Mexico and let them find their way back to their home in their own country.

Seal the border to keep more form coming in and the ones that are here should be shipped back however long it takes. They are not undocumented immigrants they are ILLEGAL aliens. Their presents on American soil constitute a criminal act. Arrest and deport them.
