One thing you could do is also loose any water weight you are carrying by cutting down on salt. Diet soda is verry high in sodium, so are a lot of processed foods. Sodium makes you retain water.
Losing weight is expending more calories than you are taking in. (I know borrrrring, but true). Try walking 3 miles a day, that will burn about 300 cals. Don't guess on the 3 miles, drive a car to measure a walk, it's farther than you think. Running does not burn up any more calories than walking. It's just that you can cover more ground in the same amount of time, therefore, if it takes you an hour to walk 3 miles, in the same hour you could run 6 miles, therefore burning more calories. Start with walking though, do it EVERYDAY for 2 weeks, you'll know if you're ready to move up to running. Running doesn't get your legs in shape any better than walking.

2 pounds per week isn't that much over the recommended rate.
However, I suspect that you're not gonna make it if you're working the heavy muscles in the legs. In the summer, when I'm cycling, I lose 2" from my waist (body fat) and don't lose a pound -- my leg muscles are massive at that point!
I have no clue why you need to lose 10 pounds in 5 weeks... maybe you have to make weight for wrestling? Perhaps you should try to lose body fat and increase muscle -- pay attention to the tape measure and not the scales?
To get your legs in shape I'd do a combo of spinning (bicycle riding), running and weight machines.

If I'm not mistaken, drinking water can burn calories. I think you can burn one calorie per each ounce of water that's 40 degrees (F) or below. It isn't much, but every little bit helps. The reason you're able to burn calories by doing this is because your body is working to warm the water that your drinking. If I'm correct, you could, for example, burn 100 calories each day just by drinking five 20 oz. glasses of the above. That certainly wouldn't cause you to shed 10 lbs. in one month, but it's just a little extra help.
Just a note- It takes 3,500 calories to equal one pound of body weight. An interesting little tid bit to know, especially if you count calories consumed as you eat and calories burned as you exercise.
By the way, be thankful that you're not like me... I'm 30 years old and almost 100 pounds heavier than I was when I was 22. (Went from 150 lbs. to 238 lbs. .) YIKES!

this is guaranteed to make you lose about 10 pounds in 2 weeks...if not less.
Per day eat:
2-3 servings (250g per serving) of lean protein inc. chicken breast without the skin, tuna in water, tofu, lean cut of red meat....stick to the chicken and the tuna for maximum results.
2-3 servings (250g per serving) of vegetables. DO NOT EAT ANYTHING THAT GROWS UNDERGROUND including potatoes and carrots. DO NOT EAT peas and corn.
2-3 servings of strawberries or cantalopes. 4-6 strawberries per serving and 1/2 cantalope per serving. you can have 1 apple instead of a serving but no more than every other day. 1 orange or 1 peach can be a serving too.
2 servings of bread SUBSTITUTES. 2 melba toasts is a serving. 1 slice of CARB-Wise toast is a serving. 1 slice of a dry rye crisp is a serving.
condiments: mustard...all you want. 1 tbsp of carb-wise kraft italian dressing. 1 tbsp of ultra-fat free philly cream cheese.
DRINK AT LEAST 2 LITRES OF WATER per day.
For the first two days you can eat all you want of these items. JUST FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS. Then stick to the serving amounts.
You will lose on average 5-10 pounds the first week and then 2-4 per week after that.
Good luck.

I recommend alternating your days between running and stationary biking (If you can).
If weight-loss is more of a goal than training for a race; alternate 10minutes of running with 5 minutes of walking. This way you can extend your workout time and probably enjoy it more as well.
