My grandparents had a dog die last year of botulism and he had a bone that was especially stinky, and we're not sure if maybe he got it from the bone. I just bought a bag of them for my dog and they smell more than usual and I'm afraid to give them to her.

A few years ago, I bought a bag of rawhides. Opened the bag, gave some to the dogs and a litter of pups that we still had. Within an hour, the pups and some of the dogs got sick. I took all remaining rawhides away. I took the pups to the vet the next day because it hit them worse, but still they were not too bad. The vet gave me meds for the pups. I told him about the rawhides,, but he didn't think they caused the problem even tho they got sick within an hour of eating them. The pups were fine by the next day. No more rawhides for my dogs. A couple of days later, I read in one of my chihuahua books about rawhides from foreign countries. They are processed with all kinds of dangerous chemicals including formaldahyde. They can make the dogs very sick and even kill them if they eat enough of them. This doesn't really have anything to do with botulism, but it just shows you how dangerous rawhides can be.

I'm not sure if it is botulism but dogs can not only get sick from some of the rawhide bones but can also die. You have to be really careful where your rawhide bones came from. They can be poisoned from badly made rawhides that come from some of these foreign countries.

No,but I've heard that people can get salmonella or E.coli from handling rawhide and then not washing their hands. My dogs eat them all the time and have never gotten sick, but I do watch when the rawhide starts to get too small, then I take it off of them and throw it away so they don't choke.

I have never heard of this, and my dog has eaten about her body mass in rawhide with no problem. Also dogs have pretty tough immune systems so dont worry.

Botulism is caused by an anaerobic organism-it can't survive in the presence of oxygen.

no but i have heard of a lot of other problems associated with rawhides.. from choking to finding large undigested chunks in dogs stomachs... the bleached (white) ones are bad because they are BLEACHED to make them white to look better....

Yes , when they bury them , they start to decay. Then they dig them back up and start chewing on them again..... Yes they can catch a lot of things from rot......

no, but it doesn't surprise me. my girlfriend's dog almost DIED on one of them just from the 'splinters' in them...and the vet told her to never let her dog have one of them again.
