Not weird at all!
Here's a little story about one of my favorite baby gifts: When I was expecting my son I lived across the street from a couple I barely knew. They brought their elderly parents from Hong Kong to live with them. The elderly parents spoke no English, so I REALLY didn't get to know them well at all.
Right after my baby was born the young woman across the street brought over some beautifully knitted little baby items. She said her mother-in-law had made them because she knew I was expecting the baby. Here was this elderly lady I truly did not know, and yet she sent baby gifts just because she knew I was having a baby. I just thought it was so nice.
Its one thing when friends and relatives send a gift. Its very nice, though, when someone just helps celebrate a new baby even if they don't know the family well.

I don't think it's weird at all to give your neighbor a baby gift. What a very, very thoughtful, nice gesture!

It would be sweet and I'm sure appreciated. A lil something for the baby and maybe even a lil something for the mom, like a gift certificate for a pedicure. If you don't like that idea, maybe wait til the baby arrives and then cook a dinner and take it over. I know I loved that, it was a big help!

Absolutely not! It's quite acceptable for you to bring over a gift, especially since it allows you the opportunity to explore a new friendship. If asked, you could always say that you saw it in the store, and just couldn't resist.

An inexpensive but thoughtful gift would be completely appropriate. Your kind gesture might be the start of a friendship.

No not at all. Its a sweet gesture. If she refuses the gift or is horrified i see it as being bad etiquette. You seem like a lovely person. Keep it up!

that is so cute and such a nice gesture - you never know what might come from it, you might be friends for 20 years?!? If only more people took a risk and did good karma like you - well done!! You will reap the rewards for your goodness :)

You can take her a card and it wouldn't be weird. It would be a good gesture and they would be happier to have you as neighbors.
