I'm 5 months pregnant and making out my registry at Target.com and was looking at the car seat mirrors that help you to view your baby in a rear facing car seat. A review was left on one of them by a woman saying that she had been told by a local policeman that the mirrors were unsafe. She went on to say that he had said in the event of an accident the baby would be smashed into this mirror.

Has anyone else heard this? I'm a first time mom so of course I'm worried about every single detail, but this is the first time I have ever heard this.

You really do not need one. I have had three girls and haven't had the need for a mirror. It will cause a distraction while you are driving. You should just listen to your baby while your driving. He/she will let you know if you need to stop for something by making noises. As far as the legal issue, the only reason I can fugure that it would be illegal would be if it was mounted on the windshield and blocked your view out the front of the car.

Congrats on the baby and good luck!

i have never heard this. Sounds like a "young wives tale." We have one and 1. it is attached to the headrest, not anywhere near where the baby could hit it. 2. Even if the baby did hit it, it is plastic, not glass and is surrounded by a soft stuffed fish shape.

We love our mirror and have one in both cars. It really helps my toddler feel connected and allows him to be satisfied rear-facing as long as his seat allows. He is 20 months old and may go past 2 rear facing because it is safer.

I have never heard of this. If it is something that you would like to have but are worried about it they make ones now that hook to the back of the seat but are stuck on stuffed animals or things like that. If they weren't safe then I don't see anymore of them being made. I would also call your local PD/SD and find out from them.

is the mirror attached in the back of the car?
in which case the baby would never be smashed in the mirror.
the baby would move in the direction the car is driving, that's why little babies have the sit 'reversed'.
this way the back absorbs most of the impact in case of an accident.

drive save!

Don't waste your money they are such a pain. Unless you have the one w/ infant mirror you can not see the baby when rear facing anyway. Plus you will find yourself checking it, which takes your eyes off the road.

I can see why it would be dangerous. I have 3 kids and never had a mirror with any of them.

You could always call your local Police/Sherriff and ask them.

I feel it would be better to have one than not.
