If I'm having wine with dinner, I will usually order a Kir. It's a small amount of Framboise (French black currant liquor) topped with white wine. That way, I don't have different types of alcohol and get a headache.
If I'm at a business function, I'll order a Campari and soda. It's a little bitter, but very refreshing tasting and you can sip on one drink practically all evening, unlike some of the sweet cocktails that go down quickly.
Most nice restaurants with fully stocked bars offer these drinks, but in a situation where they don't, then I ask for a recommendation.

Before a meal you should order a drink such as a martini or a Scotch or bourbon high ball. These drinks are cold, light, and get the appetite prepared to receive your meal. Following the meal, you would only want to order a dessert drink, such as brandy, cognac, Armagnac, or some liqueur. These actually shut down the taste buds and aid in digestion. Avoid silly frat house drinks like Fuzzy Navels and Sex on the Beach. And don't drink clear spirits like vodka or gin after the meal.
You'll look like you "know your drinks" and your table manners and your stomach will settle well in the bargain.

Order what ever you feel like!! If I'm at a place with a good wine selection, I go with a red wine. I prefer a shiraz or pinot noir. I also enjoy margaritas (on the rocks w/ salt). If you feel like you have to drink just b/c your at a nice restaurant, that is just silly. If you want coke, drink coke. Or try a virign pina coloda.

Order one Bombay Martini, dry, with an olive, up.
It's classy, yummy, and you only need one.
Drink plain soda water or water with lemon with
your meal.
Enjoy.
However, if you want a Cola, order Cola!

Order whatever you want. There's nothing wrong with having a pop of that's what you want... That said, if a female: a margarita, cosmo, or dirty martini. A guy: beer, single-malt scotch, good Irish whiskey.
