It means the unknown. However, occult arts and sciences are more well known every day, making them less "occult"

Occult means hidden.
But it is the title given to and associated with things having to do directly with evil, darkness and devil worship and such things as Astrology, fortune telling, tarot cards, Ouija boards, palm reading,
predicting the future, speaking to the dead, ghosts, witches, demons and satan.
All of the above name things are dealings of the occult.
I do hope that I've provided you with some insight on your question.
I'll be praying for you..................

The word occult comes from Latin occultus (hidden), referring to the 'knowledge of the secret' or 'knowledge of the hidden' and often meaning 'knowledge of the supernatural'.

I think it means anything secret or hidden. I don't assume it to be a negative word. Truth can be hidden and can be a positive thing in the right context.
