A father is explaining ethics to his son, who is about to go into business. "Suppose a woman comes in and orders a hundred dollars worth of material. You wrap it up, and you give it to her. She pays you with a $100 bill. But as she goes out the door you realize she’s given you two $100 bills. Now, here’s where the ethics come in: should you or should you not tell your partner?"

Keep the money for yourself, that's what your partner would do.

no, business is not fair. Ethics should be followed only when it is life or death, not when it deals with money and profits. A mistake by a customer, is a benefit to you, so it cost her, it should not cost you. White Men in suits like Enron did not follow ethical practice and they should go to jail because they volunteered to commit mass deception, it was not a mistake by their customers, it was them committing a direct and casual relationship to break rules and commit deception upon the investing public, that is unethical the the letter of the rules of conduct in the code of professional resposibility. Now by not returning the 100 dollar bill, it would be immoral but not unethical. The distiction is important. The immorality is that you are a bad person, benefitting from unfairness, but business is not about being fair, but being legal.
