You don't say whether you are interested in gifts for strangers or acquaintances, or if you are talking about a loved one or family member.

If it is a general goodwill gift for someone you don't particularly know, just about anything will do. Small gift baskets with mini-liquor bottles or candy or something similar pops into my mind immediately...I would avoid something that runs the risk of becoming clutter.

If it is family, I think the best gift is love, understanding, and sensitivity. Whomever it is surely has had a life-changing experience. They may not be the same people you remember, and may have a hard time being back in the 'real' world for quite some time. Listening, without judgment, and without pushing for more details is a great gift. Taking care of the details, like paying the bills and doing the dishes, for just a little bit longer (though I know you're tired of having done it all for the last year and a half) is a great gift. Love is a great gift.

I don't know what you relationship is with this Soldier but If you are Friends I would just spend time with them doing things you both enjoy doing.

Other than that I don't know if a gift is necessary. I never got a gift when I got home from Iraq, but that could be because everyone knows I don't like receiving gifts, so that could have been a gift in it's self.

I think gift certificates to restaurants or gift certificates to clothes stores. They would be happy with some good food and fashions and sizes sometimes change when they are gone for a while. Most of them can use some new clothes.
