Canberra

The capital is Canberra which is Aboriginal word for meeting place. Melbourne was the capital prior to Canberra....I'm going from memory here......I think Canberra was founded as a capital to stop all the bickering between Melb and Sydney, which are big interstate rivals. It was founded in the middle of the two with it's own territory-The Aust. Capital Territory. The suburbs in Canberra are mostly and possibly all named after early Prime Ministers and Australian statesmen......I think the most famous landmark might be the Parliament House...also I answered because I figure no American is going to know our capital if the majority of their population thought New York was their capital prior to Sept 11, 2001.......I thought I'd go from memory as there was another question that asked for non-Oz answers for the same thing...Canberra is also the rev-head capital of Australia and Summernauts is a great car themed event, it's also Australias porn capital - I read that everywhere and think that's what all the politicians expenses must be... It's a well designed city by a European architect?! - something like that &
Population: 200,000 - 300,000. Can't remember anything else without looking it up... (-:

Canberra. That's why is is located in the Australian Capital Territory.

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and has nothing to do with the running of the country. Mentioning Sydney just serves to confuse the Americans and Japanese.

I think the population is more 300-350 thousand people at the moment.
The people from Canberra and Queanbeyan and surrounding towns sort of merge into one so even though it is a quiet place there are still a fair amount of people.
It has a bad wrap for being full of boring politicians and public servants...which may be true ;) but there is some stuff to do once you scratch the surface.

Canberra, Centre of the known Universe.
Population around 260,000, most of the working adult population are not civil servants, possibly the most multicultural town in Australia. When you see two women in jeans and Islamic headscarves walk past and a few minutes later a Buddhist monk while two Japanese students eat tempura nearby you know it's not Kansas.

Complaints about politicians not fair, they are the people that the rest of Australia sends to us, we didn't send them to you. Luckily the most we see of them is at the airport.

Streets in the older parts designed by an architect from Chicago called Walter Burley Griffin.

Most obvious landmark by day would be the telecommunications tower on top of Black Mountain, at night the aircraft beacon on Mt. Ainslie.
