Ones to avoid:
Norton (although Symatec's corporate products are fantastic!)
Macfee
BitDefender
Kapersky (a new virus has emerged which actually uses this one to knock off the competition - put me right off)
Avast - very crash happy in new builds.

Paid recommendation:
Symantec Corporate (light, powerful and available for retail purchace directly from their webpage)

Free reccomendation:
AVG hands down

Just be sure to also use a anti-malware program as well, as these types of infections are usually beyond the scope of any AV application - Ewido would be worth a look there :)

Best is hard to define, but it starts to become a matter of cost and how many computers you can afford. About a year ago, I got AVG anti-virus from Grisoft and have used it on both my computers. I have no complaints and they just indicated a new version would be available to replace the version I have and they indicate more efficieny. Optionable like Norton and MacAfee (I've had both previously) and is seemless. Best of all it is FREE, and you can upgrade to other paid versions if you need them (like for support, etc.). For some people that have more computers than me, they prefer this software and the affordability!

Do not get Norton or McAfee under any circumstances.

If you want free, then AVG Free Edition is THE best.

If you want to pay then Kaspersky Labs is awesome. It should be enough for me to tell you that this is Russian based and the Russians are so good that a cracked/pirated version of their software doesn't exist.

I use Norton Systemworks 2006. It works pretty well. i also like to use free programs like Ccleaner, Adaware SE and Spyware Blaster. I had trouble removing a virus called Movieland and had to edit my registry. Happy computing!

The one that you'll actually use and keep up-to-date.

Other than that, security suites add firewall, spam filtering, spyware removal and more. Pick one that's easy to use and constantly update.
