John shows what loving God really means. (Read 1 John 5:1-5)
First, the apostle points out that everyone believing that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, or Jehovah's Anointed One) has been born from God. or been spirit-begotten by Jehovah. Moreover, everyone who loves the Begetter, Jehovah, loves anyone else born from that one. Yes, all of God's anointed children love him and would be expected to love one another. Such brotherly love also is characteristric of the great crowd of other sheep having earthly hopes. John 10:16; Revelation 7:9.

My Bible states that verse slightly different....it's been translated into modern English. It says: "4 because everything that has been born from God conquers the world. And this is the conquest that has conquered the world, our faith."
But, you have to look at the context of that verse and read the surrounding passages to get the real meaning. Verse 1 of that same chapter says that "everyone believing that Jesus is the Christ has been born from God." We have to acknowledge and believe that Jesus is the Christ. Then, in verse 2, it explains that when we do this, we "gain knowledge" and "are loving God and doing His commandments." Verse 3 then states that the "love of God means that we observe His commandments; and yet his commandments are not burdensome." Verse 4 ties it all together by re-affirming that we have to believe Jesus is the Christ to be born from God...."because everything that has been born from God conquers the world. And this is the conquest that has conquered the world, our faith." When we put our faith in Jesus, we are obeying God's commandments. Therefore, we prevail over this world because we have God's backing. When we're on God's side...who can harm us? (Psalms 118:6)
Hope I've helped.

Reading from the New International Version (NIV) Bible,
1 John 5:4 reads,
For everyone born of God overcomes the world.
This is the victory that has overcome the world even our faith.
There are male and female that is where it begins and ends.
The answer to your question: whatsoever means EVERYONE.

In that context, it's speaking of a person who is born again. Because the second half of the sentence says "overcomes the world". Since Jesus died on the cross and conquered sin and death, and since as believers, we are "more than conquerors" in Jesus Christ, that means a born again believer has in them the spirit of God....which overcomes the world.

The verse is talking about Spiritual Birth not physical birth (spiritual birth = commiting your life completely to Jesus Christ -- so you live in daily relationship with Him, and do your best to obey his teachings at all times).
Cordially,
John
