i think my year and a half old chihuahua may be pregnant, but it is very hard to tell. she was around another dog through her heat and for a few weeks afterwards, and while they were supposed to be separated, i think they were let out to play together every time i went to work. Ever since then, her nipples have been very large and swollen, and look like there may be milk, while none comes out. her stomach feels hard, but it really isnt much bigger, and up until the past couple weeks, she wasn't eating very much more at all. She only ate a little anyways, about a cup of food every day or two. Now she is at about 2 a day. She has been sleeping a lot, and she is much more affectionate, always wanting to be near us. i asked the vet about false pregnancies, and he said while they are possible, with these symptoms, they are not very likely. I havent had to money to take her to the vet,but i need advice. This all happened in the beginning of september,so the time would be coming up very soon.

She is a 15 pound chihuahua mix, and the male was a smaller(around 6 pounds) long haired chihuahua, pure bred. I havent been able to take her to the vet, but if any complications arise, i will definately take her. For now, i just need advice.

she also sleeps almost ALL day, literally, all night, and over half of the day. but she is still playful, though not as much as she used to be.

If she is pregnant, she could be having pups within days. From what you have described it is hard to tell. She should be showing more, unless she only has one or 2 pups and they are very small. She could be having a false pregnancy. I had one dog that got heavy like she was having pups, and the day she would have delivered, she got thin again. There were no pups. Weird how she lost the weight she had gained tho on the day she should have whelped. Since her nipples are so swollen, that does suggest that she is pregnant. Just watch her very, very carefully the next few days. What kind of dog was she with when she was in heat? I hope it was not a large dog, or a dog a lot larger than she is! If she is pregnant and she has to have a c-section, you need to be finding the money somewhere for that or you will lose her and the pups.

I would need to know more info on the dates but you normally dont show signs until about 6 wks. the belly grows quickly then. Also at this time the vet can do radiographs to tell you how many. The teets can swell some after a heat. Have you noticed any clear vaginal discharge? This happens at 4-5 weeks and is a clear sign she is pregnant. I hope this wasnt her first heat. If so she might not be at maturity and you need to consult w/a vet not to mention she needs to be on a higher protein food for the growth of pups. You need to prepare and do the best for the dog. If you dont have the money for this vet visit whats to happen when you dont take care of it now and she needs surgery or even worse yet..euthenization. If you dont plan on breeding then she needs to be spayed. My females get very affectionate when they are bred. Eating increase happens at about 6 weeks for them as well and you notice changes in teets and belly almost daily. I have corgis so this breed for appearance might be differant. What kind of dog would of bred her...she might have difficulties if the stud was a much larger breed. Start preparing and setting a whelping box up for her to sleep in. Dont let her get overweight..this makes for harder deliveries but dont mistake overweightness w/belly growth. Keep her active to stay physically fit as well. She will need the endurance and muscle for the delivery. I highly advise a visit to vet so you maybe guided properly and try to go to a AKC reg. vet so they give you the best care for that breed. You may find this on the Akc website. Good luck

The gestation period of a dog is 60-65 days. During this time the dog gets lazier, hungrier and fatter by the day. It is important to feed her well during this time. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, she will need twice or three times the ration she ordinarily gets, and her food has to be rich in minerals, trace elementd and vitamins. Towards the end of the pregnance and during nursing period the supplements have to contain plenty of calcium. Towards the end of pregnancy she wants to prepare a nest and you should have the birthing box ready. She will need a quiet spot where she can deliver and raise her pups.

The mother takes care of the pups all by herself for the first 4 weeks. From the fifth week on you have to supplement the mothers milk with solid food and start cleaning the birthing box because once the puppies start eating food the mother stops eating their feces. In the sixth week the puppies should get dewormed and their first immunizations during the eighth week. Then when they are 8 to 9 weeks old the puppies can be given to their new owners.

If the mother dog will not feed her puppies, you can feed the puppies eggyolk and petmilk. You can also add some Karo Syrup to that formula.

I hope this is helpful!

If u don't want puppies take her to the vet if u want puppies there r a few sighs to tell if she's pregnant. Vaginal discharge will usually accur around 1 mounth of mating. The teats will become more prominent due to an increase in the blood supply around the base of the nipples this should appear between 25 to 30 days after mating. Appetite is usally depressed during mid-pregnancy.but not in every case. The adbomen will enlarge and the total body weight of your dog may increase by 20%55%. This may not be noticeable untill 45-50 days into pregnancy. Behaviour may also change such as displaying slight depression. Closer to the birth date your dog will probably start to express her nesting instincts scrathing at the floor or in her bed and sighs of increasing restlessness. Hope I helped :)

A life and death question is what kind of dog might she have bred with? A male and female chihuahua can have enough problems when the pups are born (whelped) but when mixed with a different breed this could cause problems with whelping (dystocia). This may need life saving surgery so that your dog doesn't die. If you don't have the money for the vet then you don't have the money for the pups. You need to get her xrayed to see if she is pregnant and if do how many puppies she will be having. This site might provide information but you are going to have to go to the vet to ensure that she will be able to have these pups.

It seems to me that your dog is definitly pregnant. I have a pregnant dachshund now. Over time as her pregnancy has progressed she has become more emotional and alot more clingy with me. After she was bred she started getting swollen nipples and they seemed larger. She didnt have a baby bump really until about a month into the pregnancy. Also my dog has increased her diet too.

My suggestions are to go back on a calendar and estimate the time when she would have bred to the male dog, and then count forward 63 days. she should have them around that date.

Also I suggest going to a vet when it is possible for you just to make sure that nothing is going wrong with her pregnancy

Good Luck!

I can't give much information, because I haven't really seen a dog being pregnant. I think the best is bring her to the vet and have a check. It shouldn't be anything serious... But if you really need information on this topic, go to this link: http://www.vetinfo.com/dpregnancy.html

I'm not sure if it helps much, but that's nearly all I can do. Wish you luck!

Please have your dog spayed so that this won't be a problem in the future. There are too many unwanted dogs to be irresponsibly letting dogs breed. This is very sad if your dog is truly pregnant. Will you have her spayed, please?
