I have been buying the matted frames. Can I just buy a "regular" frame and add a mat that is sold seperately? Will it fit ok?

that depends, if your frame is big enough to place a matte between the picture and the glass it might work.

You said that you bought matted frames so if you put in a different mat it should fit because the frames accounted for the space a mat would take up; all you may have to do is trimthe mat you are going to use if it is too big.

You can buy a regular mat, but may have to cut out the hole for the picture. Mats DO come in standard sizes, so you may be in luck.
