My dentist perscribed penacillian for a badly decayed tooth that will need to be extracted. I started taking the antibiotic on Thursday and the pain isn't getting any better. It's going to be at least a week before I can get the tooth extracted. Should I call my dentist to ask for a different antibiotic? The pain is pretty strong - 1000mg of advil doesn't knock it out.

Yes, call the dentist. Ant time I've taken antibiotics for a bad tooth, I feel better after the first 2 days. They can't extract it till all the infection is gone.

Antibiotics can ONLY be of help if there is an ABSCESS present, and even then only as a desperate measure when treatment can't be performed immediately. Dentists do not have to wait until the antibiotics are finished, and teeth CAN be removed even with infection or inflammation present. Do you wait to finish antibiotics until you pull out an infected splinter? This is a reason why we are seeing increasing incidences of antibiotic resistance. And there is no guarantee that it will work for you anyway!
Alternatively, you may have an inflamed nerve. Using oil of cloves or toothache drops may help, but again, you really need definitive care, not medication for a week. Sometimes dentists may perform an emergency nerve removal for pain relief and rebook you for the extraction at a later date.
I'd suggest you call the dentist and ask if he has any emergency appointments or cancellations where he can get you in sooner. Be willing to go at any time offered. Or, is there someone else who can see you sooner?
Please be careful with the dosages of painkillers you are using. Alternate between Advil (ibuprofen) and Tylenol (acetaminophen/paracetamol) every 4 hours.

You should call your dentist and let them know. However; antibiotics often take some time to kick in. If you started on Thursday, you should have started to feel better. One question is, are you taking the Penicillin exactly as it is prescribed? If you are, then it is possible that you may need a different antibiotic. Certain antibiotics can only work on certain bacteria. If the pain is still present, I can't imagine that your dentist will have you wait a whole week to take the tooth out. Contrary to what other people have written, you can have a tooth extracted while it is still infected! If your dentist cannot extract it for you, have them refer you to someone who can do it sooner! Most dentists will squeeze you in, especially in an emergency!

The penicillin will do nothing against the pain but will keep the infection from getting worse and spreading from tooth into body-organs,blood and so forth-which would be very serious for you.Until the tooth is taken out it will hurt. Try putting a Glove of Garlic on the infected tooth its has been proven to reduce tooth pain ,being the best home remedy that works If its not better in a in a 24hr.period call the dentist and tell himof the pain you are in for he can, suprised he didn't.prescribe(can call into your pharmacy so have phone no ready when you call)a pain medication which does not interfere with the penicillin and vice versa. Try the glove of garlic if you do not have can also use garlic powder or oil but the real garlic is best. Hope you get relief soon for nothin as bad as a toothache. To help you rest heat milk but can still drink without burning yoursel, mix in some hony-have to heat the milk for releases compund that relaxes where one can sleep. Also fo the tooth put some warmth on the cheekl---hotwater bottle but towel between bottle and your skin or heat cloth and hold to cheek

I would suggest calling ur dentist for a different antibiotic...It usually take 24-48hrs for the antibiotic to kick in, then the pain should subside..I wouldnt suggest to get the tooth extracted until the anitbiotics kick in otherwise the anesthic will not work and u will feel everything! U should ask for some pain meds or take ibprofen.

Just because your taking antibiotics doesn't exactly mean it's going to take the pain away. If it's unbearable, get something for pain until you get the tooth extracted.

Dr.Ibrahim

the antibiotic is not for relief pain it just for treatment inflammation and that important before extraction because its impossible extract teeth with inflammation and that normal if pain don't decrease when u use antibiotic
If you want relief pain try to take ( Ibuprofen 400mg ) or ( manic acid 500mg ) that will help you but also continue your antibiotic

The only antibiotic I've had for my tooth was Pen-V-K. It's not for pain exactly but for the inflammation that's causing the pain. No asprin/tylenol would help. Only PenVK.

I am going thru that now but when my Dentist gave me the prescription for the antibiotic, she also included something for pain, Vicodin. When the 5mg tabs didn't help, I called the office and told her it didn't help. She called in the 7.5mg tabs. You should be able to call your dentist and have a painkiller called in to your pharmacy.
