If you get one from a decent breeder, they are great little dogs. They do tend to be your shadow, and are never happy without you...their hair matts, rather than shedding, so you have to either clip them or brush often..they can be quite stubborn to train, and tend to sneak places to pee..They get too frightened to go outside alone..

.If not bred by a good breeder, they are prone to many health problems, such as diabetes, heart trouble, poor thyroid function, food and contact allergies that affect the skin, and poor teeth health..If you get from a good breeder, they are long lived and fairly healthy..

Heres a rundown of Maltese.
Maltese can be very energetic and are known for their occasional wild outbursts of physical activity, running around in circles chasing their tail, and bolting at top speed with amazing agility; given this, they still do well for apartment dwellers. They are relatively easy to train and enjoy a playful game of fetch. These intelligent dogs learn quickly, and pick up new tricks and behaviours easily. Since they were bred specifically for companionship, they do not do well being left alone for long hours, or even seconds.
The breed has a reputation for being good-natured, but may be intolerant of small children or other dogs. They can be protective of their owner and will bark or may bite if animals or people infringe on their territory or are perceived as a threat.
For all their diminutive size, Maltese seem to be without fear. In fact, many Maltese seem relatively indifferent to creatures/objects larger than themselves (unless of course it is the owner). They are among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs, yet they are lively and playful as well as vigorous. Because of their size, Maltese dogs are not a good choice for families with small children because they can be easily injured.
Maltese have hair, not fur and have little to no shedding if cared for properly. Like their relatives Poodles and Bichon Frisé, they are considered to be largely hypoallergenic and many people who are allergic to dogs may not be allergic to the Maltese.
The Maltese is generally a healthy breed with few inherent problems. The average life span is 12-15 years.

Because when people get a dog or puppy they think that it should be like a wind up toy. Play with it when we want to play with it, be magically house broken, be magically quiet. They forget that this is a living breathing being. Altering or not has nothing to do with this...it's the mentality of the owner. I've had many intact dogs that didn't urinate on my walls or furniture because they were properly trained. I've even had females in heat and never had a house training issue with my intact males. It's all training. Sure neutering might take the edge off but it doesn't replace training.

I have a Maltese. He is like a human. I researched dogs very well before I bought him. Because of my health, I needed a small and not to hyper little friend. I also wanted a dog that did not shed.
My little guy does whatever I do. He can be happy watching T.V. or reading. He can be hyper and play a great game of fetch. If I am in bed, he is in bed too. They want to please their people and be with you every minute.

They have beautiful hair, not fur. It is long and silky. I comb him every other day and that is enough. I do have him groomed about every 6 or 7 weeks. They do not shed and never smell bad.

He barks like he is the size of a Great Dane. He has no fear. He loves every person and every animal. I could not ask for a better companion than he is. They are very opinionated and stubborn. He and I have some great discussions and I am not going to tell you who wins most of them.................

I would have to say,I see no negative things about the Maltese Breed. They're very intelligent little pets that make ideal house pets for any family, but are very difficult to keep groomed with the long hair, but there is an easy solution to that and all you have to do is give them a puppy clip.

They tend be more allergy prone. Their teeth can be costly to maintain. They need to be groomed.
Other than those few I could think of, they are good dogs. Usually lead long lives compared to other breeds
