Last month, I had a root canal in one of the back teeth. I did not have it capped with the enamel, just filled in with metal. I will probably get it capped someday when I have the money--and when it stops hurting. It started hurting a week ago, just occasional ouches. It is hurting more, just like it did when it still had roots. Hey. What the heck is going on here? Didn't that guy get all the roots out? To make it worse, a *different* dentist filled the tooth up after the first dentist took the roots out. A dentist who was horrified by the work done by the first dentist. Apparently, that company has a bad record. Gee, why didn't anybody tell me that BEFORE....but now what? I do NOT have the cash for someone to rip out the new filling to dibble around in there looking for the lone root stem. Is there anything else that might be wrong there that's simpler? And not quite as expensive? Damn, that was an expensive treatment! And if it didn't work....grrrrr!

LOL, Honey he didnt remove the roots. He removed the nerves from the roots. And yes, sometimes there can be a hidden canal. It happens. Dont shame the doctor for that. Canals in teeth can be very tricky. Missing a canal, doesnt make him a bad dentist. Upper Molars can have an extra canal, and they can be VERY HARD to find. All we have are x'rays to go by. AND, NOT always can you see those canals. You just know, they are there. Except Upper molars, CAN have an extra one. And its not always visible to the eye.

Piece of advice.. You can go to an 'Endodontist' (Specialist~ in Root Canal Treatment) for an evaluation, and its usually free of charge. My advice go to one and have the tooth evaluated. Specialist have special instruments (microscopes) that a General Dentist does NOT have, that WILL and CAN tell you exactly whats going on.

Another thing... Root Canal Treatment, IS NOT 100%... Sorry but true! They can go bad, WITHOUT it being the doctors fault. A doctor just cant honestly tell you if YOUR tooth will except the treatment or not. It's just a chance the patient has to take.
As far as the crown is concerned, its your best option on subsiding sensitivity. Having a metal filling in that tooth can be some of the problem. If anything you should have gotten a build up done in an Composite type style of filling, if you couldnt afford the crown.

Bottom line, go back to your Dentist... talk to him and explain whats going on. REMEMBER, it's NOT always the doctors fault, if a RCT goes bad. They CAN NOT predict when a patients tooth will and will not except Root Canal Treatment.

First of all he didn't remove your roots just the nerve that runs through the roots, If the dentist didn't remove all of it and it has been filled iyou may get an infection, I would try some anitbiotics first then seek a second opinion, When all the nerve is gone the tooth is no longer vialable and it will need a crown, it will become brittle and break, if it breaks below the gum line you are looking at a surgical extraction which is not cheap. either way you have to spend some money on that tooth, either to take it out or to cap it.
Sometimes it may stay a little sore after a root canal but not entirely painful. and it should last for very long..Good luck with that.

Sometimes when the filling is even a hair high,it could really hurt you. When you bite dawn, make sure everything is touching evenly.Sometimes you are not able to tell.Just make a short appointment with your dentist and ask him to check your bite,or even, polish your filling, that would take a hair off your tooth.Avoid pressure on that tooth.Without a crown it is fragile.Your dentist should not charge you for that. You can even tell him it fills uncomfortable.Yeah that's better.Good luck.

Go back to the guy that did your root canal and demand he do it right. Sometimes it takes a while for a tooth to settle down. You can also call your local university and see if they have a dental clinic. They normally do a great job!

If it hurts only for an instant when you bite, the tooth has probably already cracked. That sucks.
